Hamburg Airport (HAM)
Car Hire / Rental

(Hamburg, Germany)

Hamburg International Airport (HAM) is home to a number of local and national car rental operators. The car rental counters are sited in Terminal 3 and Terminal 4, and the rental cars are parked in the garage close to the main entrance.

A number of fast roads (autobahns) connect Hamburg to the rest of Germany and include the A1 (Bremen to Lubeck) and the A7 (Hannover to Kiel), which cross on the southern side of the Elbe River. Also worth noting, Hamburg contains three main ring roads, which together manage the city's traffic flow with ease, at most times.

Car Rental, Driving and Rules of the Road in Hamburg

If you are planning to rent a car at Hamburg Airport and do not hold a European driving licence, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit. This necessary permit will remain valid for one year and should be presented, along with your local licence, making hiring your car straightforward and simple.

Driving outside of Hamburg offers a great deal of flexibility and freedom, although more urban areas can become somewhat congested at peak times. Germans drive on the right and there are always plenty of petrol stations both in and around the Hamburg area. However, those located along autobahns tend to be more expensive. The usual speed limits apply, and in theory, there is no actual speed limit in place along autobahns in Germany.

Speed limits in Hamburg, Germany
Urban areas: 50 kph / 30 mph
Open roads: 100 kph / 63 mph
Motorways / highways: 130 kph / 80 mph
